Because chocolate is originally derived from plants, it is an excellent source of natural flavonoids (types of antioxidants) found in the plants. Antioxidants help to protect the body from aging and from cell damage that takes place on a daily basis.
More specifically, dark chocolate (which is far superior to milk chocolate in terms of health benefits as it is more concentrated and contains less sugar) contains eight times the number of antioxidants found in strawberries.
Flavonoids do many things, one of which is to relax the body and decrease blood pressure. This means that foods rich in flavonoids can decrease the chances of heart problems. Dark chocolate has also been found to help lower cholesterol, so this is an added heart benefit of this tasty food.
The other remarkable property of dark chocolate is its ability to help boost your brain power, especially your memory and your ability to recall information. The health benefits of dark chocolate are many, and helping brain health is just one such example.
Studies have found that dark chocolate increases blood flow around the body, and especially to the brain. The increased blood flow brings oxygen and nutrients right to the center of where it is needed the most – the brain. Moreover, your attention span, reaction time and problem solving abilities are enhanced after consuming dark chocolate.
But this is only part of the benefit to the brain. Overall memory and recall improved with the addition of dark chocolate in the diet. It is useful to note that these findings were consistent in elderly people as well.
One thing should be taken into account though. When it is said that dark chocolate is good for you, this refers to chocolate which is organic and at least 70% cocoa content. The studies involved required testers to consume around 3.5 oz of dark chocolate daily and they had to cut 400 calories from their daily calorie total to avoid putting weight on.
However, it is not essential to consume 3.5 oz daily, since this is the equivalent of a large bar. Having just one or two squares a day will certainly help towards boosting your brain and overall health without piling on the pounds.
The same cannot be said about white chocolate or milk chocolate which is far less superior to dark chocolate. Using dark chocolate in cooking to replace milk chocolate gives a richer taste and will need less chocolate to get the same hit. If you are new to dark chocolate, you may find that it has a slightly bitter aftertaste.
It is suggested that you try dark chocolate with around 50% cocoa in it and slowly increase the amount of cocoa solids until you find it more palatable.
Dark chocolate is an indulgent way to increase the levels of antioxidants in your system. Coupled with regular brain training, it can increase your mental abilities and significantly improve your memory.

Hi Billy,
That’s my favorite cocoa level as well. I like to use Endangered Species Natural Chocolates. They have a 88% cocoa rating. You adjust to the taste quickly even if your taste is in milk chocolate. The other bonus in using their products is that they donate 10% of net profits to support species, habitat and humanity!

Boy! I love dark chocolate but if I eat a 3.5 oz bar I would be flying high. What is the minimum that I can eat and still gain the benefits?

Hi Cho Cho,
You’ll see the benefits with as little as a quarter ounce piece. You’ll feel the difference in a very short time in your personal sense of well being. Enjoy!

Great article, but are you somebody who suffers themselves? Were you diagnosed early as a child? Just curious as your perspective seems unique.

Unfortunately, I do not allow money making or get rich schemes on my site. By the way, you’re not onto something new. I get your comment several times a day with almost the exact same wording.
