I want to start with the word business, a lot of people outside of network marketing never make the connection of it being a real business. That is understandable, because a lot of people in network marketing don’t either. If you are in network marketing and don’t see your business as a real, legitimate business, you cannot expect other people to either. That presents a problem, since it is a people business, hence the name network marketing.

As I listen and talk with people who are in direct sales, observe their actions, it is very easy to see part of the problem, their actions are not consistent with having a real business. They join something without really understanding it, or fully knowing what it takes to make it happen or to experience success, that is the first mistake.
These questions may help you determine if you believe you have a real business or not.
1. In what manner do you conduct business?
a. Are you keeping good records?
b. Have a checking account for your business?
2. How much time and energy are you putting into it?
a. Are you only investing two hours a week?
b. Are you sharing with three people a month?
c. Do you know how much time you are investing, is it hit or miss?
d. Do you invest some time every day in your business?
3. Are you operating your business like you would if it was a brick and mortar business?
a. Are you treating it what it is worth or the initial investment to join?
If you are not tracking your expenses and putting time and effort in to your business everyday, success will elude you. If you put eight hours a month into a job, that was a full time position, do you think you would have it very long? Would that pay your bills or change your life?
Your view
If you view your network marketing business, or the industry as something you will try, you may as well save your energy. If it is something you think I will dabble in, forget it. Most see network marketing as an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation but not as a main occupation, that does not mean you cannot have another source for income but it is more about your attitude toward it.
The successful network marketer understands, that it is a real home business network marketing solution that has the absolute potential to change financial situations for themselves and others. That makes perfect sense when you understand the residual income opportunity associated with it, get paid multiple times for the same one hour of work. They understand that it affords them the chance to compress time.
A real business, whether it is a home based network marketing business or a brick and mortar business takes work, and lots of it. The majority of people that join a home business network marketing opportunity somehow get the idea that it is supposed to be easy, no effort, for crying out loud I can do it from home. Wrong! Yes you can build it from home, but just using the word build signifies effort, an expenditure of energy, time and money. The reason that they have that perception is because the one sharing it with them, wants to sponsor them, so they either don’t tell them everything or know it themselves. If you have to sugar coat your opportunity for others to join you, neither you or them will be successful at it, and the reason is they did not make an informed decision based on understanding and knowledge.
Direct marketing or home business in network marketing requires work, not back braking work, but time, energy and money to be successful. It is an awesome residual income model that pays in many ways.
